A new study by the Pliotas group has been published in Nature Communications. In our study entitled “Allosteric activation of an ion channel triggered by modification of mechanosensitive nano-pockets” we show that a the largest pressure activation threshold ion channel and largest gated pore in nature, MscL could be allosterically modulated by modifications engineered at the entrance of highly pressure sensitive nano-pockets. We show these modifications both promote a structural and mechanical response evidenced by PELDOR (or DEER) and dramatic functional effects observed by single molecule electrophysiology recordings. More details could be found here.
